The Rocky View Handibus is looking to the Town of Cochrane to give them some kind of indication that they will be in their corner come 2013.

Paul Siller, general manager for the Handibus, addressed the transit provider’s increasing need for funding assistance to council during their March 12 meeting, looking to members to revisit the issue during the spring budget adjustments.

“Often we’re the only form of public transportation in town,” Siller said, pointing to the increase in service they have provided to Cochrane over the past few years.

The Handibus provides a weekday-only, door-to-door service that encompasses 3,300 total hours in Cochrane.

The town provided the business with $40,000 in funding — $29,500 shy of what the Handibus was requesting.

Siller indicated that they do not receive any funding from any regional source, and from the province they do not get a ‘dime.’

Many of the Handibus’ customers are those looking to travel into Calgary or Canmore for hospital visits.

In 2011, the Handibus made a total of 1,455 local trips from Cochrane and 1,825 non-local.

The total operating costs attached to running the Handibus in Cochrane is $156,535.
In addition to municipal funding, revenue comes from user fees — which Siller recently announced were increasing to bring a more fair structure plan for all users — the Community Initiatives Program and fundraising, which Handibus does a lot of.

Handibus has already burned through their $30,000 reserve fund, which leaves them in a tough situation come the new year.

“We have nothing to come to the table with in 2013,” Siller admitted.

Councillor Ivan Davies said he fully believes in what the Handibus is providing to communities throughout the region and supports looking at their funding come spring.

Cochrane residents who use the Rocky View Regional Handibus (RVRH) for trips to appointments in Calgary will be facing a significant increase in the cost of their fares in the coming months.

The increase comes on the heels of an announcement by the handibus provider that they would be adjusting their fares across the region to reflect a standard fare structure of $4.00 for every 10 kilometres travelled.

Paul Siller, manager of RVRH, said there had been concern that the uneven fare structure previously in place was charging passengers from one municipality more than another.
